Featured FAQ: Can donors make recurring donations through our JustGive donation page?

blog_faq_featured_title_image_recurring

Question

Can donors make recurring donations through our JustGive donation page?

Answer

Yes, as long as you are using JustGive’s nonprofit services, your donors have the option to set up a monthly recurring donation to your organization.

How do recurring donations work?

Recurring donations, also known as monthly giving, are donations that are automatically processed on the first business day of each month. Donors are only required to enter their payment information once – upon set up of their recurring donation – which makes this an easy and convenient way for them to increase their impact on charity.

The option to give monthly allows you to break down your total ask, giving donors a practical alternative to a one-time gift that might feel out of reach for their budget (ex: $25/month instead of a one-time gift of $300). This allows them to contribute the same larger amount spread out over several months.

How do donors set up a recurring donation?

Donors can set up a recurring donation by visiting your custom donation page and following the steps below:

  1. Select the amount recurring-checkboxto give monthly
  2. Just below the amount, check the box that says “Make this a monthly recurring donation”
  3. Click Proceed To
    Checkout
to get to the checkout screen and, under “Monthly Recurring Donations Terms”, select the month and year to begin the recurring donation
  4. Complete the donation

Note that donors are required to create an account on JustGive when they create a recurring donation so that, if needed, they can log in and modify their recurring donation at any time. Donors cannot indicate an end date for their recurring donation.

TIP: Make it even easier for your donors to give monthly by pre-checking the recurring donation box on the donation page for them with a custom donation button link.

When donors click the link, they will land on your donation page with the “Make this a monthly recurring donation” box already checked. Donors can easily uncheck this box if they do not want to make their donation recurring.

How do I track recurring donations to my organization?

When your organization collects donations through JustGive, we provide detailed reporting for each donation you receive. When you log in to your account and run your donation report you can see recurring donations marked with “Yes” in the Recurring column.

Monthly giving is an easy and convenient way for donors to make a difference throughout the year. In addition to providing reliable donation levels, monthly donors don’t need to receive regular appeals. This opens up communications to the real-life impact of their donations, keeping your donors connected and engaged.

Featured Nonprofit FAQ: Customizing your donation button

blog_faq_featured_title_image_npo_button

Question

Can I customize my donation button for specific programs, amounts or for recurring?

Answer

Yes, you can add specific text to your donation button link so that program, amount, or recurring options are prefilled when your donor arrives art your page. Here are some examples using the sample donation button link https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010.

Program designation

If your organization is running a campaign, has multipleprogram chapters, or is a fiscal sponsor, customizing your donation button link with a specific program ensures donations are easily and correctly designated. To specify what program is selected when the donor arrives at your donation page, add “&designation=Program+Name” to the end of your donation link.

Example: https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&designation=Children’s+Literacy

Custom amount

To ask for a particular amount for events or programs, prefilling the amount for your donor adds convenience and ensures accuracy. Add “&amount=x” where x = the dollar amount to the end of your donation link to prefill a specific donation amount.

Example: https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&amount=50

Recurring donations

Make it easy for donors to support your cause monthly by including a custom button link with the recurring donation option preselected on your website, recurringsocial media, and in email communications. To prefill the recurring donation checkbox, add “&isRecurring=true” to the end of your donation link. They can uncheck it if they prefer not to make their donation recurring.

Example: https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&isRecurring=true

Multiple items

The above appends can be combined to prefill more than item. For example, if you want to encourage donors to set up a recurring, $20 donation, you would set up the donation link like this:

https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&isRecurring=true&amount=20

Perfect for ongoing programs, you can even combine all three customizations to ask for recurring donations of a specific amount for a specific program:

https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&isRecurring=true&amount=20&designation=Urban+Homelessness

When your donor visits a link like the one above, they will see the amount, recurring and program designation prefilled as in the highlighted screenshot below:

custom-link-example

Note: If your organization is using a custom shortcut url like https://npo.justgive.org/justgive, the first symbol of the appends above should be changed from “&” to “?”. For example:

To preselect the recurring option, add “?isRecurring=true”: https://npo.justgive.org/justgive?isRecurring=true

The offer donors a recurring, $20 donation link, add “?isRecurring=true&amount=20”: https://npo.justgive.org/justgive?isRecurring=true&amount=20

#GivingTuesday Tips for Success

tips-for-success

Less than 4 weeks to go until #GivingTuesday. Here’s what you need to know.

GivingTuesday, the global day of giving, is November 29th. It offers a huge opportunity to increase awareness for your cause and support for your organization while reaching out to new and current donors. There are many ways to get your staff and the community involved in your #GivingTuesday. The three areas of focus we’re highlighting are fundraising, collaboration and communication.
Fundraisescreen-shot-2016-11-01-at-12-39-37-pm
Launching a #GivingTuesday campaign helps kick off your year-end fundraising campaign and creates awareness within your community. Customize your donation page and take advantage of our free Donate Now button features. Add a #GivingTuesday top graphic and message on your page, customize your donation amounts and descriptions, and include a special program designation for #GivingTuesday.

The more your donors feel connected to the #GivingTuesday theme and tie-in, the more likely they are to participate in the movement.

Join our webinar: “An introduction to JustGive’s Donate Now button” on Wednesday, November 9 at 2pm ET. We’ll show you how to customize your Donate Now button so you can raise more donations and reduce fundraising fees.

Collaborate
Rally your community and get others involved. Reach out to local businesses for support or collaborate with other local nonprofits and present a united front to the local merchants association. Offering a good word may be enough for a local business to invest in a community board announcing #GivingTuesday and give 10% of net proceeds from sales on the day or offer a matching gift.

Set a goal and ask a board member or corporate sponsor to match donations for the day. You can use this to incentivize new or larger donations during your campaign.

Communicate
Social media is the key to making sure your message is received and shared to new audiences. Build momentum with your supporters in advance and communicate a consistent message across several channels, including email. Starting with your email list, get the word out about #GivingTuesday and don’t forget to encourage your #GivingTuesdayaudience to share.

Make your posts compelling and share-worthy. Give donors a clear message and encourage them to tweet, post, snap and share.

For more tips and tools, #GivingTuesday offers free toolkits, sample messages, promos, and more.

Fundraising Campaigns for Nonprofits

blog_FAQ_featured_title_image_npo_fundraising

FEATURED NONPROFIT FAQ:
Fundraising Campaigns for Nonprofits

Question
What are the best tips for running a short-term or special fundraising campaign for our nonprofit through JustGive?

Answer
JustGive offers a couple of different ways for your nonprofit to raise funds for a short-term or special fundraising campaign.

CREATE A SPECIAL FUNDRAISER PAGE

Late last year, we introduced our new online fundraisers which make it quick, easy and simple for your organization to raise money.

JustGive’s fundraisers allow you to add customizations like theme colors, photo or video, fundraising goal and tracking, custom thank you message for donors, designations, a custom URL, and much more.

As always, any donations you receive through your fundraiser page are tracked and displayed in your online donations report in your JustGive nonprofit account.

To get started, visit the Fundraisers pageNote that you’ll need to create an additional donor account to use fundraisers but rest assured the data from your fundraiser donations will appear in your usual online donation report.

fundraiserexample

CUSTOMIZE YOUR DONATION PAGE

Your custom donation page on JustGive doesn’t have to stay the same all the time! Use the built-in, customization features to make your donation page reflect your fundraising campaign.

To make any changes to your JustGive donation page, just login to your nonprofit account and click the ‘Edit Donation Page’ link.

Here are 4 ways to change your JustGive donation page for a fundraising campaign:

1) Add a fundraiser-themed image

imagesSwitch out your normal logo or image on your donation page to one that reflects your fundraising theme. The recommended size for your header image is 950px wide by 100px high, and it can be a jpg, gif or png (max size 512k).

2) Update your mission/description to mention your fundraiser

You can customize your mission statement on your donation page, so make sure it includes any timely information about your fundraiser such as an explanation of the fundraiser, what dates it runs, and your goal. This will let your supporters know that a special fundraising effort is underway and help drive a sense of urgency for donations.

Picture13) Customize your Donation Amounts

Associating a tangible value with a donation amount can help your donors better understand how their donation will be used, and often motivate them to give more. If you are channeling donations towards a specific fundraising goal, let donors know about that. For example, “$50.00 – Provides literacy tutoring for  month”.

4) Update your Program Designations

If you are running a special fundraising campaign, make sure the programs listed on your donation page match. For example, if you’re running a “Spring 2016 Campaign”, make sure that is an available program that donors can choose from on your donation page. That way they can be assured that their donation counts towards your fundraising goal.

To make any changes to your JustGive donation page, just login to your nonprofit account and click the ‘Edit Donation Page’ link.

The 411 on UTC: Understanding donation timestamps

blog_FAQ_featured_title_image_faq_npo_utc

FEATURED NONPROFIT FAQ:
Understanding UTC

When your donors make a donation through JustGive, the date and time of their transaction is recorded in the UTC/GMT time zone (Coordinated Universal Time). This is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time, and is the usual time zone internet companies use when storing transaction data.

Question
What does UTC mean for donations?

Answer
Donations in your organization’s online donation report are recorded in the UTC/GMT time zone. When compared to Eastern Standard Time (EST) or Pacific Standard Time (PST):

  • UTC is 8 hours ahead of PST. So if it’s 10 p.m. UTC, it’s 2 p.m. PST (i.e. 8 hours earlier)
  • UTC is 5 hours ahead of EST. So if it’s 10 p.m. UTC, it’s 5 p.m. EST (i.e. 5 hours earlier)

Here’s a handy time converter you can use to convert JustGive UTC donations to any donor’s time zone.

Standard_World_Time_Zones.png

Payments made to your nonprofit for donations received through JustGive are also based on UTC transaction times. For example, if an East Coast donor makes a donation at 9 p.m. local time on January 31, which is 2 a.m. UTC on February 1, the donation is considered part of the payment for February’s donations. This will be reflected in your online donation report for February, and paid out in a JustGive check mailed in March.

For tax purposes, the transaction time can be converted back to your donor’s time zone when claiming a tax deduction.

For example, if the donation date and time on JustGive is 2 a.m. on January 1, 2016, the EST time would be 9 p.m. and the PST time would be 6 p.m. on December 31, 2015.

When this donation is converted to the donor’s U.S. time zone, it falls within the 2015 calendar year, and is acceptable to the IRS for claiming a tax deduction.

Customizing Your Donation Page: 5 Ways

blog_FAQ_featured_title_image_npo_customize_page

FEATURED NONPROFIT FAQ:
Customizing Your Donation Page

You want your organization’s Donation Page to be as compelling and effective as possible, making it easy to give. It needs to work seamlessly with your existing site and include your branding to create a familiar, comfortable experience for donors.  And it will generate donations most successfully when it echoes your key fundraising messages and needs. JustGive’s Donation Page design offers you choices to do just that.

Question
Can we customize our Donation Page?

Answer
Yes, in several valuable ways.  Here are five items you can quickly change so your Donation Page produces better results:

GLT

Logo
Upload a logo for your organization in .jpg, .jpeg or .png file format. The maximum file size is 512k and recommended size is 950 pixels wide by 100 pixels high.

Mission Statement
Add your mission statement (maximum 400 characters). This will appear beneath your organization’s name and logo at the top of your Donation Page, reminding donors why you exist.

Donation amounts
You can create up to 10 unique donation amounts with optional descriptions to show donors what their gifts can do (example: $25 – provide basics for a sheltered mom in need). A list that’s specific for your nonprofit is a great way to reinforce your case for giving. It can persuade donors and build trust, since they want to know the impact of their donations. Graphic example.

In the list of JustGive donation options, “Other,” where donors can enter their own amount, is always included.

If you don’t enter custom amounts, the default amounts are $25, $50, $75, and $100.

Tip: For holiday giving, consider increasing the donation amounts listed to obtain larger gifts, since you know it’s the prime season for generosity.

Program Designations
GLT2When making a donation, your donor can specify which program they’d like to support. The default programs listed on your donation page are “General Fund” and “Other.” You can edit them and add other program names to the list at any time (unlimited). You can also reorder the list – to highlight programs that most need of support at the top of the list.  Graphic example.

These options give you a great way to drive donations to new, popular or seasonal programs too (like an adopt-a-family program for the holidays).

JustGive Donation Page Address
You can simplify your JustGive Donation Page website address so it’s easy to remember, track, and use in other marketing and fundraising efforts too. Just enter a custom ending to your URL.

For example, the nonprofit Save The Golden Lion Tamarin’s donation page is located at https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=20-2874701, and they’ve also customized it to be https://npo.justgive.org/SavetheGoldenLionTamarin.

Both your original URL and your custom address will work for donors.

Getting started

To customize your organization’s Donation Page, just log in and click on Edit Donation Page.

And just in case you’ve forgotten, JustGive’s Donation Pages are mobile-optimized so your donors can give from their smartphones, ipads or tablets—anywhere, anytime.
