Question

Can I customize my donation button for specific programs, amounts or for recurring?

Answer

Yes, you can add specific text to your donation button link so that program, amount, or recurring options are prefilled when your donor arrives art your page. Here are some examples using the sample donation button link https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010.

Program designation

If your organization is running a campaign, has multipleprogram chapters, or is a fiscal sponsor, customizing your donation button link with a specific program ensures donations are easily and correctly designated. To specify what program is selected when the donor arrives at your donation page, add “&designation=Program+Name” to the end of your donation link.

Example: https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&designation=Children’s+Literacy

Custom amount

To ask for a particular amount for events or programs, prefilling the amount for your donor adds convenience and ensures accuracy. Add “&amount=x” where x = the dollar amount to the end of your donation link to prefill a specific donation amount.

Example: https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&amount=50

Recurring donations

Make it easy for donors to support your cause monthly by including a custom button link with the recurring donation option preselected on your website, recurringsocial media, and in email communications. To prefill the recurring donation checkbox, add “&isRecurring=true” to the end of your donation link. They can uncheck it if they prefer not to make their donation recurring.

Example: https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&isRecurring=true

Multiple items

The above appends can be combined to prefill more than item. For example, if you want to encourage donors to set up a recurring, $20 donation, you would set up the donation link like this:

https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&isRecurring=true&amount=20

Perfect for ongoing programs, you can even combine all three customizations to ask for recurring donations of a specific amount for a specific program:

https://npo.justgive.org/nonprofits/donate.jsp?ein=94-3331010&isRecurring=true&amount=20&designation=Urban+Homelessness

When your donor visits a link like the one above, they will see the amount, recurring and program designation prefilled as in the highlighted screenshot below:

Your donation receipt can be customized with your organization’s logo. If you uploaded a logo when you customized your donation page, that same logo will be used in your donors’ email receipts. To upload your logo and customize your donation page, visit our nonprofit resources: Edit your Donation Page

All donations made to your Organization through the Donation Site are processed and disbursed through JustGive’s DAF. If goods or services are provided, you shall provide the donor with the estimated value of goods or services provided in return for their donation.

GivingTuesday, the global day of giving, is November 29th. It offers a huge opportunity to increase awareness for your cause and support for your organization while reaching out to new and current donors. There are many ways to get your staff and the community involved in your #GivingTuesday. The three areas of focus we’re highlighting are fundraising, collaboration and communication.

Launching a #GivingTuesday campaign helps kick off your year-end fundraising campaign and creates awareness within your community. Customize your donation page and take advantage of our free Donate Now button features. Add a #GivingTuesday top graphic and message on your page, customize your donation amounts and descriptions, and include a special program designation for #GivingTuesday.

The more your donors feel connected to the #GivingTuesday theme and tie-in, the more likely they are to participate in the movement.

Join our webinar: “An introduction to JustGive’s Donate Now button” on Wednesday, November 9 at 2pm ET. We’ll show you how to customize your Donate Now button so you can raise more donations and reduce fundraising fees.

Collaborate
Rally your community and get others involved. Reach out to local businesses for support or collaborate with other local nonprofits and present a united front to the local merchants association. Offering a good word may be enough for a local business to invest in a community board announcing #GivingTuesday and give 10% of net proceeds from sales on the day or offer a matching gift.

Set a goal and ask a board member or corporate sponsor to match donations for the day. You can use this to incentivize new or larger donations during your campaign.

Communicate
Social media is the key to making sure your message is received and shared to new audiences. Build momentum with your supporters in advance and communicate a consistent message across several channels, including email. Starting with your email list, get the word out about #GivingTuesday and don’t forget to encourage your #GivingTuesdayaudience to share.

Make your posts compelling and share-worthy. Give donors a clear message and encourage them to tweet, post, snap and share.

Patagonia’s Unconventional CSR

California-based Patagonia, which specializes in outdoor apparel, has taken an unexpected and untraditional approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Sustainability, giving back and caring for the planet are firmly connected in a company conviction that’s clear for customers and the business world to see. That’s supported by Patagonia initiatives to buy and consume less.

A family business owned by Yvon and Malinda Chouinard, Patagonia’s mission is to “build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.”BtheChange.jpg

Yvon wrote in the company’s biography, Let My People Go Surfing, “Patagonia exists to challenge conventional wisdom and present a new style of responsible business.” True to form, in 2012, it was one of the first companies in California to become a Certified B Corporation.

Social & Environmental Activism

Knowing the resources it uses and waste it produces, Patagonia believes it has a responsibility to give back. Rather than thinking of what they do as charity or traditional philanthropy, the company calls it “our Earth Tax,” and considers it part of the cost of doing business.

For the past 30 years, through its membership in 1% For The Planet® (an alliance of businesses), Patagonia has given 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. To date, the company has donated $70 million in cash and in-kind services to 3,400 grassroots groups. A few stats show how the company supported environmental and social initiatives this past year:

Sustainable Clothes & Supply Chain

Patagonia is determined to create “the world’s most socially and environmentally responsible supply chain,” and has steered the clothing industry into a more sustainable direction through its actions.


With products and suppliers.
In 1993, Patagonia was the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to use fleece made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. And in 1996, it switched to using organically grown cotton in all cotton products.  It was also one of first major outdoor companies to work with Fair Trade USA on its Fair Trade Certified apparel.

In 2007, to be more transparent about its supply chain, the company started publishing the environmental impacts of articles of clothing in The Footprint Chronicles® as well as including it on Patagonia’s product pages.

Within the industry. As a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition—an alliance of 30 companies in the clothing and footwear industries formed in 2010—Patagonia and member companies measure their environmental and social and labor impacts, benchmark performances against each other, and publish the results in a social and environmental performance index.

The company’s belief in environmental conservation and corporate responsibility is integrated into its anti-consumption advertising. Maybe the most recognized of these ads ran on Black Friday in 2011 with the surprising message: “Don’t Buy This Jacket”, encouraging consumers not to buy what they didn’t need.  Patagonia has echoed this message over the years in its “buy used” marketing with eBay, and most recently, through its Worn Wear initiative about repairing clothes. While many think these messages fly in the face of why the company exists, Patagonia firmly believes it’s just the right thing to do.

Making a Bigger Difference

Patagonia’s commitment to inspire and implement environmental solutions reaches beyond the industry. In 2013, the company launched $20 Million and Change, through a holding company, Patagonia Works. It’s dedicated to a singular cause: using business to help solve the environmental crisis. With this fund, Patagonia helps like-minded, responsible start-up companies which want to work with nature rather than using it up.

JustGive offers a couple of different ways for your nonprofit to raise funds for a short-term or special fundraising campaign.

CREATE A SPECIAL FUNDRAISER PAGE

Late last year, we introduced our new online fundraisers which make it quick, easy and simple for your organization to raise money.

JustGive’s fundraisers allow you to add customizations like theme colors, photo or video, fundraising goal and tracking, custom thank you message for donors, designations, a custom URL, and much more.

As always, any donations you receive through your fundraiser page are tracked and displayed in your online donations report in your JustGive nonprofit account.

To get started, visit the Fundraisers pageNote that you’ll need to create an additional donor account to use fundraisers but rest assured the data from your fundraiser donations will appear in your usual online donation report.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR DONATION PAGE

Your custom donation page on JustGive doesn’t have to stay the same all the time! Use the built-in, customization features to make your donation page reflect your fundraising campaign.

To make any changes to your JustGive donation page, just login to your nonprofit account and click the ‘Edit Donation Page’ link.

Here are 4 ways to change your JustGive donation page for a fundraising campaign:

1) Add a fundraiser-themed image

imagesSwitch out your normal logo or image on your donation page to one that reflects your fundraising theme. The recommended size for your header image is 950px wide by 100px high, and it can be a jpg, gif or png (max size 512k).

2) Update your mission/description to mention your fundraiser

You can customize your mission statement on your donation page, so make sure it includes any timely information about your fundraiser such as an explanation of the fundraiser, what dates it runs, and your goal. This will let your supporters know that a special fundraising effort is underway and help drive a sense of urgency for donations.

Associating a tangible value with a donation amount can help your donors better understand how their donation will be used, and often motivate them to give more. If you are channeling donations towards a specific fundraising goal, let donors know about that. For example, “$50.00 – Provides literacy tutoring for  month”.

4) Update your Program Designations

If you are running a special fundraising campaign, make sure the programs listed on your donation page match. For example, if you’re running a “Spring 2016 Campaign”, make sure that is an available program that donors can choose from on your donation page. That way they can be assured that their donation counts towards your fundraising goal.

Giving From Your Heart

Follow your heart. Listen to your heart. Your heart knows the way.

There are a lot of clichés that encourage you to be guided by what you feel and take action based on what you believe in your heart. And in this National Heart Month, rather than focus on physical heart health, let’s talk about emotional heart health.

15910043680_5b040e7726_mYou never know when one word or one helpful gesture or act of kindness can mean the world to someone else. Giving them reason to go on, to believe in goodness again, or to get through a rough patch. You don’t know when a smile hides incredible sadness and pain, and how reaching out in some way when the inclination strikes you can change the course of a life. The best we can do is to follow our hearts and try . . . not shying away from feelings, but paying attention to ­­­­them.

The emotions and beliefs we have about giving are not something we talk about as much in the business world as in nonprofit circles. Disasters and deaths, though, can break through our veneer and are when we more publicly express emotions.

When it comes to charity, we give because of the good it will do—and the impact it can make. We also give because something that happens in life gets to us, and we want to make things better. We give because we care.

I’m borrowing from a familiar credit card commercial message, but I believe giving from your heart is “priceless.”

3211153569_b93ba33f2a_mI know we’re a month past making resolutions for this year, and actually, I’m not asking you to make a new resolution for 2016. I’m asking you to make a resolution for your life: make giving from your heart a part of how you show up in the world.

I’m not going to try to sell you on the benefits of giving or why it makes us happy. I’ll just say this: giving money away can improve your health and is, quite literally, good for your heart.

And this heart month, I challenge you to listen, find what connects for you, and take action. Starting now.

Support what touches your heart

Have you lost a loved one to a terrible disease or personal tragedy? Give to help find a cure for the health issue that has personally touched you, to keep tragedy from striking other families, and to provide support for someone else who has to deal with it.

kitty_love_unsplashAre the commercials that show abused animals so hard to watch you switch the channel? Don’t push those emotions away, do something about it. If you aren’t in a position to give money, volunteer your time or donate old blankets—doing what you can for something you feel so strongly about. Put your energy to work so the day comes when there’s no reason for those commercials to exist.

Are you frustrated by our education system, worried that kids don’t have all the resources and opportunities they need to succeed, and concerned about what they’re not getting at school (food, support, exposure to the arts, more)? Give them access to what they need to change their lives.

Do you believe we need to make sure the basic needs of others around the world are taken care of?  Support the nonprofits sending them global aid—for better health and life-saving services that we too often take for granted.

I have a sensitive heart. I feel things deeply, and family members and friends know that about me. But I don’t make any excuses for who I am. And I hope I’m known for being true to who I am, all the time. When I care, it’s sincere. When I feel it, I react. And when I give, it’s from my heart.

This month, I challenge you to do the same.  Give from—and for—your heart. For your life.

Latest Trends in Workplace Giving

America’s Charities recently released Snapshot 2015 – The New Corporate DNA: Where Employee Engagement and Social Impact Converge. The third in a series, this year’s report includes insights, trends and best practices for workplace philanthropy and employee engagement.

Findings were collected from an online survey of executives from 120 companies in the third quarter of 2015. Their responses represent more than 600,000 employees and 17 unique industry groups, geographically dispersed, and equally distributed between large companies (more than 5,000 employees) and small to midsize companies (5,000 and fewer employees).

Snapshot 2015 makes the case:  It’s not enough to say giving of time, money and skills is important. Leaders must be involved in employee engagement, authentically, and it must be embedded in a company’s DNA—part of its culture, values and actions.

One of the most prominent trends, according to Steve Delfin, President and CEO of America’s Charities, is the changing expectations around social impact:

  • Companies want more evidence their charity resources help with strategic social responsibility goals.
  • Employees want more transparency, accountability and proof their donations are helping make a social impact.

Millennials care about social impact—and companies are expected to do more to engage their employees and support causes they care about. Their CSR efforts create a valuable competitive business edge for recruiting and retaining talent.  And 92% of Snapshot 2015 respondents (from small to large companies) believe customers expect them to be good corporate citizens too. So companies need to step up with more sophisticated and responsive engagement programs.

When it comes to workplace giving, for many years, a payroll deduction program was the most common way to engage employees. Those programs have grown steadily. But now they’re only part of the picture.

According to Snapshot 2015, giving programs have changed quite a bit in the past two years. Today, almost two thirds of small, medium and large companies offer employees year-round giving opportunities; this is becoming the standard. Compare that with 2013, when just over one third of companies were moving beyond fall campaigns to year-round giving. Differences by size of company:

  • 85% of large companies offer year-round giving, and 70% have matching campaigns.
  • 44% of small to midsize companies offer year-round giving, and 28% have matching campaigns.

Survey respondent and Director of Corporate Responsibility for PwC US, Heather Lofkin Wright commented, “Giving at the office is about the change we can affect when we work together. . . meaningful ways to be a part of that collective impact.”

platformsYear-round volunteering has emerged as a core part of employee engagement programs. Something that was just coming into the picture in Snapshot 2013, volunteer opportunities are now offered by 92% of large companies and 60% of small to midsize ones.

Year in Review: A Look Back at 2015

Thanks to your giving and support, JustGive sent more than $30 million to charity in 2015!

Our charity gift cards continued to be popular in 2015, showing a 300%+ increase thanks in part to a much-improved process for companies and individuals to order gift cards in bulk through the JustGive website.

This year, we redesigned our Fundraisers product, making it easier to raise funds for charity through a nonprofit campaign or for a special occasion or cause, an upcoming wedding, or in memory of a loved one.

We also improved the Nonprofit Services section of our website to make it simpler for our member charities to use JustGive’s online donation tools to collect and track their donations.

And we’re proud to have helped our many partners by developing and supporting corporate giving programs as part of their social responsibility efforts.
